Horry County

Need permit to remove live oaks 24" DBH or greater

Georgetown County (Murrells Inlet, Litchfield, Pawleys Island)

All trees over 10" DBH protected except palms, Bradford pears, pecan trees, pines (other than longleaf) , sweet gums, wax and crape myrtles.

Georgetown County (Rural Areas outside of above)

Live oak, laurel oak, red maple, bald cypress, pond cypress, magnolia, poplar 12" DBH or greater protected.

City of North Myrtle Beach

Need permit to remove any tree 16" DBH or greater

City of Myrtle Beach

The following trees are considered Landmark Trees and need a permit for removal:


Eastern Red Cedar 30"

Southern Magnolia 30"

Live Oak 25”

Laurel Oak 30”

White Oak 25”

Willow Oak 30"

Red Maple 36"

Bald Cypress 30"

American Holly 20"

Flowering Dogwood 15"

Hickory (except Pecan) 36"

Town of Surfside Beach

Permit needed to prune or remove any branch or tree greater than 8" in diameter

City of Conway

Permit needed to remove any of the following trees:

  • Dogwood, Crape Myrtle or Redbud 4" DBH or greater
  • American Holly, Southern Magnolia, Red Maple, River Birch, Bald Cypress, or Sycamore 8" DBH or greater
  • All oak species 14" DBH or greater

***DBH = Diameter at Breast Height (Diameter of the tree at 4.5' off the ground)
